Multifunctional Biomaterials for Regenerative Medicine

Biomaterials are any substances — natural or synthetic, alone or made of multiple components — engineered to interact with biological systems for a medical purpose. Biomaterials science has experienced strong and steady growth and currently plays a prominent role in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

In particular, the development of multifunctional biomaterials, i.e. materials capable of simultaneously eliciting more than one biological response, represents an emerging area of research, which aims to address current unmet clinical challenges. Multifunctional biomaterials can be produced by a wide range of methods and techniques including electrospinning, 3D printing, molecule self-assembly, and surface functionalization, and are envisaged for applications as diverse as drug delivery systems, orthopedic and dental implants, cardiovascular medical devices, and scaffolds for engineering tissue.

This Special Issue seeks to address a broad spectrum of themes that demonstrate important physicochemical and biological properties of biomaterials, and the use of different multifunctional biomaterials for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications. We are welcoming submissions of both original research articles and review articles covering these topics.
