Role of Local Adipose Tissue in Cancer

Adipose tissue biology has been associated with many aspects of cancer initiation, progression and systemic consequences. Over the last years, the understanding of the effects of adipose tissue expansion upon the prevalence of certain tumour types has been investigated and discussed. An aspect not so well explored regards the role and importance of the adipose tissue in the systemic consequences of cancer, as in cancer cachexia. It is clear today that the various anatomical adipose depots contribute in a heterogeneous manner to the onset of systemic inflammation in different diseases and one such aspect has been poorly explored in oncology. For this special issue we invite contributions on the relevance of adipose tissue, considering the heterogeneity of depots, focusing on tissue crosstalk and role in cancer-associated chronic systemic inflammation, as well as its consequences in cancer patients and experimental models.
